Lets get real about Wright

Lets honestly try and step outside our digital world and try and see things from the perspective of someone who doesn't surf the web from the perspective of our enightened views.

I find Rev. Wright to be a man of great intellect. I find his lectures informative and inspiring and consider him a man of great works. However that being said, let me tell you I and many of you are in the minority my friends. Watching the news in the past 24 hours has really disheartened me as to the status of the republic and the revolution we began over 200 ago. And in some ways, some users here have too. The media is absolutly swiftboating Wright and Obama, but Wright no matter how well intentioned and spoken, is playing right into their hands. No matter how much sense he may make overall in his performances over the past day, he is giving fodder to those who will play 30 second soundbites of his speaches. 30 second soundbites that are not flattering to Wright nor Obama. 30 second soundbites that that a majority of Americans will not agree with at best or find offense to at worst. As much as I'd like to hope for America to accept Wright, altogether good and bad, as a rightous man, I am increasingly of the opinion it will not happen through the soundbites the media will provide for Americas consumption. Wright as we can see is not one to shy away from adversity, but I do question the purity of his intentions in the fight he brought to bear against the media this past day. I feel it may in small part be about the mans pride, not that the man doesn't have many things to be proud about, but speaking out in defense of ones pride is rarely recieved positively. Rev Wright needs to step away from the microphone and let others defend him. From my vantage point, Wright isn't doin Obama any favors by going out and giving ammo to the traditional media and the wingnutosphere. So if some people think that maybee Wright should fade into the background, or possibly Obama should take this chance to, yet again damnit, distance himself from Wright, before you dismiss the person as a troll and ridicule them try and see things from outside our illuminated sphere.

That's a pic my boy took of us while I wrote this diary. He thinks I'm, in his words, totally gay for engaging in such online activity. He agrees with everything I wrote, and is of the same mind. There was a delay in the publishing of my diary because we're supposed to watch "There will be Blood" together before I move to Vegas so went went to get it, but Blockbuster was closed, and Wal-Mart doesn't cary it cause they suck.
Yeah the third time I've been to a Wal-Mart in 6 years and I couldn't even get what I wanted.
Wal-Mart is the Devil.

The Wright issue (1.50 / 2)

Obama is trying to squirm away from Wright, saying he doesn't agree with what he says. He can't get away that easily. Rev. Wright and his Trinity UCC have been following James H. Cone's Black Liberation Theology for all the years that Obama has been a member. The things Wright says that people object to derive from that theology which is racist in the extreme.

Book review at Amazon:
http://tinyurl.com/6how9o

You don't be a member of a church for 20 years without going along with its precepts, its theology, the whole basis for the church.

Yes, friends, the Wrighting is on the wall, plain as day, for all to see.

Obama will have the albatross of Wright around his neck, the baggage of Rezko, and the millstone of Michelle for all time. Now, all we have to do is sit back and wait for the party big whigs to realize this. It seems they're slowly coming around. Being politicians, they'll go with the flow and now, that's away from Obama and towards Hillary.

Re: Lets get real about Wright (2.00 / 1)

Good try Drewid, but the people that demonize Wright based on 30 second sound bites are willfully ignorant, keyword willfully.  There was a time in American history where you only knew politics by what the media told you.  But today, with Youtube and the netroots and so much raw information, those that take the news media at its word want to be misinformed and/or uninformed.

So despite the discussions we have here, the people that actually hear what you're saying will be the choir, and the ones, like the first commenter in this diary that use Wright as the pinnacle of ad hominem attacks against Obama, will willfully ignore truth and nuance.

Every take a look at what Obama's church stands for? Ever read up on the TUCC Web site before it was altered to protect Obama? Ever read any of the church bulletins? No? Well, I have and it's all horrific.

The problem for Obama is not just what Wright said in those horrible sound-bites. The problem is what that church is, what it represents. It's about what Obama bought into and what that means about his character.

The voters are getting a clue. Get used to the idea that Obama is not going to be the nominee.

And committed violent, despicable acts. And devoted themselves to ridding their community of black people.

If you were going to describe the KKK and what they did, would you think of those two items above as key points?

I have read what the church stands for.  It's a pretty famous church in Chicago and has been for over 20 years.  The fact that you find it horrific says more about you than it does about the church.

It's all about perception...as the... (none / 0)

...old saying goes: "Politics is perception."

I think Wright's actually a pretty damn cool guy. And, if Obama's our nominee, I'll vote for him in November. No problem. And, I'm a Hillary supporter!

But, what I think really does not matter to most voters. What naive Obamaphiles fail to understand is it's how other voters think that is "the problem."

Separate the fact that I'm a Hillary supporter from the reality that I'm also a professional media consultant, please! So is David Gergen, btw. And, here's what Gergen said on Friday (to which a litany of Obama supporters basically called him out, while simultaneously failing to acknowledge the guy's widely considered to be one of the most astute pundits of our generation. People are so blinded by their support of this or that candidate, they fail to listen to the truly brilliant minds that are commenting truth. And, here's some truth from Gergen this past Friday:

DAVID GERGEN, CNN SENIOR POLITICAL ANALYST (Friday, April 25th, 2008 on CNN): This might well have been shown under the segment -- what was he thinking?

It is entirely understandable that Reverend Wright would want to defend himself. He does feel he's been unfairly attacked. And this is a free country. But why now? Why break his silence at a very sensitive moment for Barack Obama?

He just -- he has just -- this is the first time in American history that an African-American has a serious chance of ascending to the presidency, the highest office in the land. And Reverend Wright has just made this climb a lot steeper. Barack Obama needed to get back on message and have the Wright story die and go away. Reverend Wright, by going -- choosing to go on television now, by making a speech to the National Press Club tomorrow, is fanning those flames once again, putting his story right back up front.

That does Barack Obama no favors.

if your right  that means that most voters are stupid enough to not vote for Obama because his ex pastor said some offensives things that everybody including the republicans know that Obama does not share those views!!!

I hope your wrong and the country won't vote and make a mistake worse than voting for Bush not once but twice I hope we as a country got a little smarter

A racist pastor doesn't mean a racist church community. Just like a baptist church with a homophobic preacher doesn't mean everyone who goes there is a homophobe.

Tell that to McCain... (2.00 / 1)

...if Obama somehow manages to survive all the negative events that have befallen his campaign, in terms of media coverage since his clobbering in PA last week.

Obama's not having a good week, no matter how you spin it otherwise. Even some of his most powerful supporters (Dean, Brazile) are beginning to hedge their bets via their public commentary over the past 24 hrs.

So...my sentiments remain...common logic prevails amidst statements from some Obama supporters which indicate they're truly in denial, or they don't have a clue about what's in store. Which is it? This is a day at the beach compared to what the Rethugs will do to him in the GE. And, every time I read a comment like:

...it's disgraceful that people are trying to lay this nonsense at Obama's feet...

...I can only think to myself: "With an attitude like this, the GOP'ers are going to walk all over you come the Fall."

And, please, spare me the sanctimonious "Well-the-public's-smarter-than-this-and -they're-tired of-this-Republican-b.s." crap.

The fact is, they're not.

Wright's not playin' well in Peoria...or Dubuque...or Kenosha. And, staunch-but-shrewd Obamaphiles--those with power in the Party--now see this as of the past couple of days, too.

We're at a turning point in this election, and it's not something that a single-digit win in NC by Obama is going to overcome, either.

That's the thing about politics, turning a phrase from Forrest Gump: "...you never know what you're going to get."

Axelrod and Obama have no control over this. And, the free ride Obama got during the first quarter of this year is over.

Deal with it.

Re: Lets get real about Wright (none / 0)

Though I agree with you that some in the GOP will use this to misinform voters in a very nasty way, I am sick and tired of that being used as an excuse for supposedly Democratic voters tearing down a Democratic candidate with spurious ad hominem attacks.

I have seen attacks here on MyDD against Obama that were worse than any attack used in 2004 against Kerry, all under the excuse of "vetting."  I have seen right wing websites link to MyDD for ugly attacks on Obama and have their webmasters state that the content seen in a particular diary here would be over the top for their right wing website.  At some point you have to say that it has gone too far.

I'm not worried if Obama wins the Democratic nomination.  He has taken just as much shit from Democrats as he will take from the Republicans.  That's a sad thing by the way.
